Rocking Chair

Solid Hardwood Rocking Chair by Rich Soborowicz

Joinery: Seat and legs are joined using a cogged mortise and tenon joint. All other joints are mortise and tenon.

Wood & Materials: Cherry is pictured, but Walnut can also be used. Other species of wood can be used, but the wood must be air dried because the lumbar supports are steam bent which require wood that is not Win dried. It is possible to mix wood using contrasting colors as long as the lumbar supports are air dried.

Finish: I use a custom mixture of Tung Oil, Varnish, and thinner. I sand between coats using 600 and/or 1500 grit sandpaper. A mixture of Tung Oil and bees wax finish the project.

Unusual Techniques & Hardware: My goal was to create a chair that would not require any fasteners other than traditional joinery, and would stand the test of time. This chair is custom made for a smaller person; however different sizes are available as orders. What varies are seat height and width along with the back height, lumbar support height relative to the seat, and the angle of the seat relative to the floor.

Size: Height 44 inches, Width 21.5 inches, Depth 40 inches
